An Unearthly Child (Episode 1)

Apparently, the first story is not available in many places but - fortunately for me - it is available in the USA via BritBox. I’ve seen this story a few times and believe I have it on a VHS tape somewhere. But BritBox is much easier. It’s kind of interesting that a British show from 1963 had a woman producer and a 25-year-old British-Indian director. However, any thinking I had that the show was ahead of its time and progressive was muted by the Doctor’s unfortunate reference to the “Red Indian.” Oh well, I guess you can’t expect too much. Not a bad story to set up the show, although I wonder about the propriety of two teachers stalking a student and following her home. I’d forgotten that Susan says she made up the term “TARDIS” in this episode. It seems like that will cause some continuity problems later when other Time Lords have their own TARDISes and refer to them as such, but I probably shouldn’t think too far ahead. Introduction

This is the journal to accompany my pilgrimage of re-watching every available Doctor Who episode. Some background might be in order. I was born in 1976 and grew up watching Doctor Who in the 1980s on the PBS affiliate in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, USA. I recorded episodes on VHS and rewatched them numerous times. It has been my favorite show since then. I watched it very uncritically and probably still watch it through the lens of a 12-year-old. I’ve also watched the series reboot starting in 2005. It feels like basically a different show, but I hold the original show in high enough regard that I’ll keep watching it. It helps having kids born in 2009 and 2012 who also enjoy watching it. When the pandemic hit in 2020, I started listening to podcasts - including a few Doctor Who podcasts. My main listens are the Old Doctor Who Show , Radio Free Skaro , and the Doctor Who Show . It’s interesting getting an American, Canadian, and Australian perspective. Listening to these podcasts has ...
